Irish Setters - Breed History
Irish Setters were developed in the British Isles and Ireland during the eighteenth century. The Irish Setter was initially bred to hunt upland game birds and was called the Irish Red Setter in the United States. The Irish Setter is a derivative of setters, spaniels, and pointers and is an ancestor of the Spanish pointer.
This breed is a fine hunting dog with a keen nose. They are pointers and retrievers, which makes them excellent bird dogs. Because the Irish Setter is one of the most beautiful breeds of dogs, today they are used more as show dogs and family companions.
Irish Setters - Health Issues
An Irish Setter owner should be aware that these dogs are prone to bloating. You should feed them two or three small meals a day instead of one large one. The breed is also prone to skin allergies and epilepsy. Some also suffer from eye, elbow, and hip problems. It is important to watch their ears for inflammation. They are also susceptible to hypothyroidism, autoimmune disease and PRA. To help avoid health problems, you should buy from a breeder who tests Irish Setters for diseases in their breed stock.
